We’re going to Madagascar and we’re likely to be off-line for a better part of two weeks, while visiting the 4th largest island in the world. Coincidentally, Madagascar is also the 4th poorest country in the world with $250 per capita income. Of course, the numbers and rankings vary in different sources, but the bottom line is that it’s a big island full of happy but poor people. Despite the poverty, lack of roads, unstable government, Madagascar has been a popular destination for the French and Italian adventurers. The Madagascar animated movie led to even more interest as of late. We just watched the movie a couple of days ago – quite nice but having little to do with the actual country. Sacha Baron Cohen (aka Borat) is the voice of the lemur king – much, much, much funnier than the Borat character. Yes, we did see that one too and I thought that the Bulgarian music at the end (while the credits were rolling) was the best part. The lemur picture on the right was swiped from here, where they talk about this newly discovered (2005) mouse lemur. There was a mouse lemur character, Mort, in the Madagascar movie, who played the role of the anxious squirrel Scrat of Ice Age fame. Steve Goodman, who discovered the mouse lemur won a MacArthur fellowship in 2006.
